The Hall

The Hall was built by Thomas Riply in the 1720s for Horatio Walpole, politician, diplomat and younger brother of Britains first Prime Minister - Sir Robert Walpole. Other members of the family made alterations in the early 19th century, including adding the Wing and enclosing the Park. On the death of the 3rd Earl in 1858 the Hall was abandoned. The property was restored when the 5th Earl moved back in 1905. The present Lord Walpole inherited the property in 1989. Since then there has been a programme of reorganisation, conservation and research into the history of the family, Hall and Park using the extensive and previously neglected archives. The Park contains evidence of the village of Woterton and its round church tower can still be seen. The 18th Century walled garden is now let and run by Barker Organics as a smallholding.

Walks

Over 20 miles of waymarked public footpaths and permissive paths run around Mannington and Wolterton linking into the Weavers Way long distance footpath and Holt Circular Walk.
You can discover a wide variety of plants and wildlife on the walks.

The gardens around this medieval moated manor house feature a wide variety of plants, tree and shrubs in many different settings. Throughout the gardens are thousands of roses especially classic varieties.

The Heritage Rose and Twentieth Century Rose Gardens have roses in areas with designs reflecting their date of origin from the fifteenth century to the present day and in the kiosk is a display about Rose History. Near to the Hall is a knot garden with scented plants and on the South Lawn a classical temple and plants selected for touch, sound and taste, as well as smell and colour.

Wildflowers are encouraged around the landscaped Lakes, and in the Chaple Gardens where Victorian follies surround the ancient ruins of Mannington Church.

Mannington Garden Shops are stocked with souvenirs and crafts, as well as plant, with a selection of containerised roses. A link with Peter Beales enables visitors to place rose orders.

Nature Discovery Days

These days for children are held in the holidays. Membership of Mannington Minnows and Hawks Natural History Club for 6-16 year olds, provide a monthly newsletter and priority booking.
