In the restored manse courtyard of historic Crathie Kirk on the banks of the River Dee there are now four very special self catering holiday cottages. Here, disabled people - and their families and friends alike - can enjoy the most relaxing of holidays in wonderful surroundings.

Each cottage has been carefully designed and equipped to ensure that both access and furnishings are suitable for the independent wheelchair traveller. Other aspects of design will take into account the different needs of holiday guests with varying abilities.

Staff, together with volunteers from the community, will be able to offer additional services to assist holiday guests in practical ways if required.

Angus - Glenprosen Cottages

Katy`s Cottage has been awarded the National Accessibility Accommodation Standard Category 2 and is considered to be suitable for a wheelchair user travelling with assistance.

    Clavan is the Gaelic for buzzard, and buzzards are just one feature of the amazing wildlife (eagles, pine martens, wildcats, red squirrels and herd of red deer are other natives) that you will find around this delightful house, which is beautifully situated high on the hill side above Loch Sunart on Scotland`s lovely west coast.

    We have six houses with ramp, wide access doors and bedrooms all on one level, they are very popular with our less mobile guests, young families and big dogs. Four are STB Cat. II disabled awarded with their large windows, large patio they are great for our wheel chair guests and carers.

    Our aim at Melfort is to enable anyone to come and enjoy a relaxing holiday in this idyllic setting, therefore it was important to us to provide comfortable and accessible accommodation for our less able guests.

    Aviemore- High Range Holiday Lodges

    Brae Riach Chalet Looking after the needs of families with a disabled member, a 2 bedroom self-catering chalet has been specifically designed and built to CATEGORY 1, STB **** GRADED specifications. It sleeps, very comfortably 3 persons, an extra space saver bed is also available. The toilet has special handles and the "wheel in " shower has a folding seat and is fully accessible. A wall mounted hair dryer is included. The kitchen is equipped with a washing machine/tumble dryer, dishwasher, ceramic hob cooker, oven/grill and microwave oven, all fully accessible to a wheelchair user. The living room is well furnished and includes television and video. The dining area has a superb view of the mountains. Parking is opposite the chalet where a ramp leads directly to the door. They own a caravan park with new amenity block, with fully accessible toilet and shower facilities.

    We have one ground floor luxury double or twin room which has specific features to make it suitable for assisted wheelchair access.
    The room is directly opposite the lift and the nearest fire exit, both of which are wheelchair accessible.
    The public rooms are one floor above. The ensuite bathroom is more than big enough for a wheelchair to turn and all doors are more than the required width.
    The bathroom has support rails by the wc and beside the bath, with a extra height toilet seat available if required. It has a large cast iron bath with an overbath shower and a platform at the back from which a wheelchair user can lower him or herself into the bath.
    The pedestal basin has knee space below for a wheelchair user. Taps are easy to grip. Light switches are lowered. There is a large button phone

    It has been fitted and furnished to a high standard - the stunning hexagonal sittingroom is glazed on all sides, and the twin bedroom with shower-room is ideal for the not-so-nimble. Upstairs there is another bathroom and an imaginatively designed gallery leading to a double-bed room. Outside, the extensive patio (furniture) is ideal for sunbathing, while for the slightly more energetic there are walks along the River Tweed to ruined Dryburgh Abbey - where there is a hotel for refreshment nearby. Fishing, golf, riding, tennis, canoeing etc. are all available locally for sporty types; while for shoppers there are all the woollen-mill and craft shops to visit in the small and attractive Border towns; and literally scores of attractions - historic and scenic - to visit within a 50 mile radius.

    The Old Mill and Granary on the edge of the former `gypsy` village of Kirk Yetholm in The Cheviot Hills is just one mile from the English Border and 8 miles south of Kelso. Dating from 1600s, and originally thatched, the self-contained lower half of this building - The Wheelhouse - has now been beautifully modernised into a delightful pied-a-terre which guarantees visitors an easy, stress-free holiday in this lovely part of The Scottish Borders, splendid views of which can be seen from the windows.

    On an attractive 50-acre private estate, just a couple of miles north of the picturesque seaside village of Elie (pubs, restaurants, all facilities) in the East Neuk of Fife, is Goodall Cottage. This former mews building has been imaginatively restored to make a most attractive and unusual holiday cottage which will most certainly appeal to all those interested in innovative modern design. It has also just been completely renovated.

    Flox Cottage was designed to accommodate assisted wheelchair users as well as able- bodied visitors
    Badanfhuarain Cottage was fully renovated during the spring of 1997, and redesigned internally to accommodate wheelchair users, providing important alternative facilities to those in Flox Cottage.

    BRAERIACH (STB ****)
  • Designed to look after the needs of families with a disabled member, this spacious, two-bedroom self-catering chalet is built to Category 1, Scottish Tourist Board (STB) Four-Star Graded specifications.
  • It very comfortably sleeps three and an extra space-saver bed is also available. The bathroom is fully-accessible, with a ‘wheel-in’ shower with folding seat and toilet with special handles.
  • A wall-mounted hairdryer is included. In the kitchen, the washing machine/tumble dryer, dishwasher, ceramic hob cooker, oven/grill and microwave oven are all fully accessible to a wheelchair-user. The living room is well-furnished and includes television and video. The dining area offers a superb view of the mountains.
  • Parking is opposite the chalet, where a ramp leads directly to the door.

    The High Range holiday complex has been under the personal supervision of the Vastano family for the past 27 years, where the standards and style have been influenced by continuity and continental flair.

    Just 2 miles west of the village of Drumnadrochit - (shops/restaurants/Loch Ness Monster Museum) on Loch Ness between Inverness (half-hour`s drive) and Fort William (one hour`s drive) - this attractive, detached cottage at Polmaily is set on a hillside above the wooded valley of the River Enrick - off the beaten tourist track and ideally placed for exploring all the magnificent Highland scenery which surrounds them. Just 3 miles south is Castle Urquhart on the side of Loch Ness where `monster` sightings have been recorded. To the west is Hamish Macbeth`s `Plockton` and The Isle of Skye and northwards is the stunning scenery of Glen Affric where `The Last of The Mohicans` was filmed in this miniature Canadian Rockies like scenery many years ago.
